The Family Financial Counseling program provides students with the knowledge, skills, and real-world experiences needed to positively impact economic and financial decision making of individuals and families. Students learn how to utilize knowledge in personal finance and financial counseling to help individuals and families improve their overall economic well-being and financial security. During their journey in the Family Financial Counseling program, students learn how to provide personal and family financial counseling, gaining knowledge and skills in financial literacy and education, financial management, consumer advocacy and protection, and consumer and financial behavior analysis.
Following graduation, students can pursue the Accredited Financial Counselor® (AFC®) credential, which is the highest standard of excellence in the financial counseling and education profession. As the Family Financial Counseling program is an Association of Financial Counseling and Planning Education (AFCPE®) registered education program, graduates are eligible to sit for the AFCPE® national exam as part of the process to earn the AFC® credentials.
Career Opportunities
Graduates will be prepared for meaningful careers across industry, government, non-profit, and academia. Employment opportunities include consumer behavior specialist, credit union services representative, financial educator, financial counselor, financial services representative, human resources specialist, insurance and loan specialist, law, personal finance advisor, and private wealth manager. Students will also be prepared to enter a variety of professional and graduate programs.
Graduation Requirements
To earn a Bachelor of Science in Family Financial Counseling, the student must earn a minimum of 120 credit hours with at least a 2.0 grade-point average. A minimum of 45 credit hours must be from upper division courses (300 level and above). Remedial courses may not be counted toward the total hours required for the degree. A grade of C or higher must be earned in the following courses:either FFC 350 or HDF 350 , FFC 351 , FFC 352 , FFC 402 , and FFC 403 .
