Companion Animal Studies Certificate


Our lives as humans are closely connected with those of non-human animals, with animals playing a prominent role in human society and culture. This undergraduate certificate will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the roles and significance of companion and working animals in society, encompassing topics such animal care, management and well-being, and the human-animal bond. Students will critically and respectfully evaluate different perspectives related to companion and working animals and clearly articulate their own values and perspectives and will demonstrate the ability to apply interdisciplinary approaches to real-world scenarios.

Certificate Requirements

In addition to successfully completing the minimum 13 credit hours of course work with a C or better, students must also successfully complete an approved experiential course with a companion animal studies focus. Completion of the Companion Animal Studies Experience is documented by registration in CAS 390 Companion Animal Studies Experience  (0 credits).

Major Course hours: 7-9


Electives


In addition to the required courses, students complete a minimum of 6 credit hours of guided electives. The elective course work includes preapproved courses. Other courses may be considered but must be approved in advance by the Certificate Director. Up to 3 credit hours of CAS 490  (in addition to the required 1 credit hour) may count towards this area.
