Hospitality Management and Tourism, B.S.

The Hospitality Management and Tourism degree program provides students with the specialized knowledge, skills, and real-world experiences needed for dynamic careers in the hospitality and tourism industry, including those in luxury hotel and resort management, sustainable tourism development, experiential event planning, digital travel marketing, food and beverage entrepreneurship, sports and entertainment hospitality, equine hospitality, or craft beverage tourism. Integrating business components and creativity, students will develop the skills needed to succeed in the rapidly growing global hospitality and tourism industry.

The degree program consists of hands-on, project-based curriculum and an internship experience that facilitates the learning of industry practices related to guest experience design, revenue and brand strategy, AI-driven hospitality solutions, financial management, and service management. Students are challenged to exercise creative thinking across marketing, communications, operations, and leadership while establishing the professional connections that will set them apart.

Internships are a required component of the program, which can lead to permanent professional placement. The internship provides students with first-hand experience in hospitality and tourism related fields, allowing them to exercise classroom knowledge in a real-world setting.

Career Opportunities

Graduates will be prepared for careers in domestic or international destinations in the hospitality and tourism industries. Career opportunities include amusement park supervisor, banquet/catering director, concert/festival producer, entrepreneur, event planner, food and service manager, hotel operations director, park administrator, sales director, and tour director. Students will also be prepared to enter a variety of professional and graduate programs.

 

Suggested Four-Year Plan for the B.S. in Hospitality Management and Tourism  

Entrance Requirement

The minimum grade-point average for entrance of all students into the Hospitality Management and Tourism program is 2.0.

Graduation Requirements

To earn the Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management and Tourism, students must earn a minimum of 120 credit hours with a 2.0 grade-point average. A minimum of 45 credit hours must be from upper division courses (300 level and above). Remedial courses may not be counted toward the total hours required for the degree.

Students must fulfill all prerequisites and achieve a grade of C or better in all HMT and RTM courses that are major requirements, and DHN 342 .

Major Selections


Plus 15 hours from HMT or RTM major selections. The student will choose, in consultation with an advisor, an additional 15 hours of HMT or RTM courses at the 300 level or above that will strengthen the program in an area of importance to the student. Courses outside HMT and RTM may be considered in consultation with an advisor and approval.
