NUR 366 - Healthcare Systems and Informatics for the Traditional and RN-BSN Tracks [3 Credit Hours]
This course outlines a comprehensive approach to nursing leadership and systems-based practice, emphasizing the use of evidence-based methods to drive innovation and improve patient care. Nurses are positioned as leaders in navigating complex healthcare challenges, particularly by understanding and applying key principles related to organizational structures within various healthcare systems. The course emphasizes the integration of information and communication technologies (ICT) and informatics tools in both direct and indirect care roles. Students will explore how technology impacts data collection, decision-making, communication, and team collaboration, as well as broader system-level efficiency. Emphasis is placed on key informatics concepts including interoperability, health information exchange (HIE), standardized nursing data and regulatory considerations. This course also addresses patient engagement technologies and nurses’ roles in promoting secure and ethical technology use. Students will also explore patient rights related to health information, strategies for secure data use, and the nurse’s role in supporting technology-related policy and advocacy efforts. Students will investigate and synthesize data related to a current nursing issue and create a plan to improve healthcare from a systems and informatics perspective.
Prereq: Admission to the BSN program in the traditional or RN-to-BSN track.
