Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education, Non-Teacher Certification, B.S.E.

Requirements for Program

The Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education (non-teaching certification) prepares students for a variety of careers related to the field of early childhood education, with a focus on teaching, administration, and advocacy. Students acquire skills to work with both young children and their families, with particular attention given to families with children with disabilities and from diverse backgrounds.

Students will participate in courses including, but not limited to, infant/toddler development, exceptionality and disability, literacy and language for young children, collaborating with families, early childhood policy, assessment, intervention planning, and differentiated instruction.

Graduates of the Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education (non-teaching certification) will be prepared to teach in private pre-school classrooms, Early and Head Start programs, and childcare settings. In addition, graduates will be prepared to work in a variety of related capacities: state and local government agencies; quality raters; early childhood trainers; early childhood directors; providers in Kentucky’s Health Access Nurturing Development Services (HANDS); early childhood researchers; and family advocate and support liaisons.

Graduation Requirements


To receive the B.S. degree in Education with a major in Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education: Non-Certification Program, students must: (1) complete the UK Core requirements; (2) complete all degree requirements; and (3) maintain 2.5 GPA.

Continuous Assessment

  1. All students in the interdisciplinary early childhood education: non-certification program are expected to meet the standards and rules for Admission and Retention. 
  2. On-going Assessment. Once a student is admitted to the program, he/she meets with an advisor to plan the remainder of the program.

Major Requirements


All students in Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education: Non-Certification Program must be admitted into upper division. This Track does not lead to a teaching certificate. A minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA is required for admission, retention, and completion of the program.
