HP 677 - KENTUCKY ARCHITECTURE AS AMERICAN ARCHITECTURE College of Design
Credits: 3
This course will examine the history of American architecture by focusing on the built environment of Kentucky, from early Native American ceremonial sites to examples of the Federal, Greek Revival, and Italianate styles; the architecture of enslavement; early twentieth- century eclecticism; Modernism; New Urbanism; and other national and international trends. While the course will survey buildings by era, type, and style, particular attention will be paid to social function and context. The course is intended to develop foundational knowledge of American architectural history, with emphasis on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Readings and assignments emphasize Kentucky’s role in westward settlement, its status as a cultural borderland, post-Civil War era commercial growth, suburbanization, and the influence of the automobile.
