Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: College of Education

Our Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Educational Psychology focuses on preparing Educational Psychologists who have strong theoretical, conceptual, and practical ties to educational psychology, and who also possess exceptional skills in the area of measurement, statistics, assessment, and research methodology. We prepare students for professional positions not only in academic institutions but also in a variety of public and private agencies in positions as policy analysts, education advisers, and research consultants.

Our doctoral program reflects a collaborative apprenticeship model that encourages students to go beyond the accumulation of course credits. Our aim is to help students develop the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to be effective creators of educational research and to raise thoughtful questions that guide their inquiry. We believe that students learn best how to do research, analyze data, communicate results, and teach others through direct involvement with faculty mentors and advanced students early in the doctoral program. To accomplish this goal, students work closely with faculty members by joining at least one research team or lab within the program.

Doctoral students enterng the program will select a program of study focusing on one of three areas of specialization: multicultural education, motivation, and development. The doctoral program of study includes coursework, a research portfolio, an internship to develop practical experience in educational psychology, a qualifying examination, and the dissertation. Prior to completing the qualifying examination, most doctoral students are required to take approximately 60 credit hours of coursework beyond the Master’s degree.

Admission Requirements

Generally, students who enter the doctoral program have completed the master’s degree in psychology or a related discipline (e.g., education). We may accept strong applicants who have completed an undergraduate degree in psychology or a related discipline (e.g., education) with outstanding academic achievement. GRE scores are required but there is no minimum GRE score requirement or cut-off. Minimum TOEFL score for international students is 79.

Applications for admission are evaluated by the program faculty who carefully review the applicant’s (a) GPA; (b) GRE scores; (c) letters of recommendation addressing academic, research, and professional experiences and interpersonal skills; (d) match with faculty research interests, (e) Statement of Purpose outlining professional goals, (f) writing sample demonstrating excellence in written communication; and (g) contribution to diversity, broadly defined to include individual social identities and background experiences. The program faculty holistically considers the entire application of a prospective student and makes decisions based not only on numerical criteria but also on perceived fit with program goals, needs, and values.
