The Graduate Certificate in School Social Work prepares social workers to practice in school based settings, a specialized field of practice. The certificate consists of 12 credit hours with 6 in an education related practicum setting. Students seeking certification for school social work in Kentucky must take an additional course to meet the Kentucky education professional standards board mandated requirements. The certificate program is available to: (1) UK degree seeking graduate students in the Master of Social Work program, and (2) post-baccalaureate (non-degree) students who already hold the MSW degree from a CWSE accredited social work program. The minimum credits required are 12 for the MSW program students and 9 for post-baccalaureate students who hold the MSW. Applications for admission are evaluated, and students’ progress is monitored and approved by a committee comprised of constituents related to school social work.
Admissions Criteria
- Graduate and postgraduate students who are planning to pursue a Kentucky school social work certification through EPSB will need to contact Janet Doss, janet.doss@uky.edu, School Social Work Coordinator because there are additional requirements.
- Must have obtained a baccalaureate degree, prior to the start of the admission term, from a fully accredited U.S. institution of higher learning or from a recognized foreign institution. See Graduate School admissions for specifics.

- International applicants whose native language is not English must submit either a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score. See Graduate School admissions for specifics.
