In response to an increasing demand, a large number of postsecondary institutions, K-12 schools, and agencies in public health, government and private business are offering instruction or training in a distance learning format. However, distance education requires a unique set of skills for course/ program development, management, support, and delivery. To prepare current and future instructors, trainers, and administrators, the University of Kentucky offers a Graduate Certificate in Distance Education. The program consists of four graduate courses. The Certificate is administered collaboratively by the Department of Early Childhood, Special Education & Counselor Education and Learning Design and Technology program in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

Admission

A prerequisite to admission to the Graduate Certificate in Distance Education is admission to the University of Kentucky Graduate School. That requires evidence of an awarded baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher learning. In addition to full admission to any existing graduate program, Graduate School admission status may be post-baccalaureate or non-degree.

To meet the required content in course and program design, students may choose from two options in Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling or Instructional Systems Design. Students also are required to take to elective related courses, one of which may be the distance education practicum offered by Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling.

The certificate requires a minimum of 12 graduate credit hours as follows:
