Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion

The Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion (KHP) offers undergraduate courses and degree programs in physical and health education, health promotion, exercise science, and strength and conditioning.

The KHP Department offers programs in exercise science and in strength and conditioning that prepare students for graduate programs within the medical and health fields, such as Physical or Occupational Therapy, Medical or Physician Assistant, Athletic Trainer, Pharmacy, and Dentistry. Students interested in careers related to movement, the medical profession, or health-related fields may complete the exercise science option or strength and conditioning option under the Kinesiology major as described in this catalog.

Health Promotion is an interdisciplinary major which affords students the opportunity to work in diverse settings including community agencies, non-profits, professional worksites, and other health-based settings. Students interested in promoting health and wellness to improve the quality of life for all can complete the Health Promotion Program as described in this catalog.

The KHP Department offers programs which allow students to earn Kentucky teacher certification in the areas of physical education and health education. Students interested in teaching and in application of knowledge and skills in community and commercial settings can complete the Physical Education Teacher Education Program and/or the Health Education Teacher Education Program as described in this Catalog.

The KHP Life Fitness program offers services courses in both individual and team activities to majors and non-majors alike.  In this program, students have the opportunity to learn individual and team sports skills and/or improve their level of fitness. Currently 20+ different courses are offered each year and over 1,200 students participate in the program. The classes are taught by instructors in the KHP Department and Departmental Graduate Teaching Assistants who have expertise in the areas of health and physical education. Individual skill instruction is available in weight training, Pilates, yoga, racquet sports, gymnastics, physical activity for stress relief, and walk/jog. Instruction in such team activities as basketball, soccer, volleyball, and ultimate Frisbee is also available.
