The Department of Civil Engineering provides a conducive environment for study and research, boasting many well-equipped laboratories engaged in active research programs related to the built environment. Our graduate program offers specializations in various fields, including civil engineering materials, construction engineering and project management, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, transportation engineering, and water resources engineering.  Faculty members and graduate students conduct research across diverse areas, encompassing natural, managed, and disturbed ecosystems, natural hazards engineering, resilient and sustainable infrastructure, as well as intelligent infrastructure systems.  Financial support for graduate students is available through research assistantships, teaching assistantships, fellowships, and scholarships.

The Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCIE) degree is available in two options:

  • Plan A: 30 credits, including 6 credits of thesis research, plus a Master’s thesis.

  • Plan B: 30 credits, including 3 credits of independent work.

Admission Requirements

Applicants to the graduate programs in Civil Engineering must hold a Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an ABET/EAC accredited or equivalent institution, with a minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale. Non-native English speakers must achieve a minimum score of 80 on the internet-based TOEFL or 6.5 on the IELTS. Those with Bachelor’s degrees in fields other than engineering, such as physical sciences, may be required to take undergraduate remedial courses, typically including introductory courses in at least four of the following areas: civil engineering materials, construction engineering and management, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, hydraulics and water resources engineering, structural engineering, and transportation engineering.

Degree Requirements

MSCE Program Plan-A (Thesis Option):

For the Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCIE) degree under Plan A, students must complete a minimum of 24 credit hours of graduate course work, 6 credit hours of CE 768 - Residence Credit for Master’s Degree , and a thesis.

MSCE Program Plan-B (Non-Thesis Option):

For the Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCIE) degree under Plan B, students must complete a minimum of 30 credit hours of graduate coursework, including at least 3 credit hours of independent work. The independent work requirement can be fulfilled by either taking approved courses with integral independent study components totaling a minimum of 3 credit hours, or by completing at least three credit hours of CE 790 - Special Research Problems in Civil Engineering  or CE 791 - Special Design Problems in Civil Engineering . Students choosing the coursework option must submit a plan of study for approval by the Director of Graduate Studies before completing 12 credit hours of coursework. All students must pass a Final Examination administered by a Graduate Faculty committee appointed by the Dean of the Graduate School.
