Students with earned undergraduate degrees in biology, chemistry, or a related degree (as approved by the certificate director) and a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.5. Students must be actively employed in a laboratory setting (within which they will complete certificate practicum training) to be eligible for enrollment in the certificate. Interested students must submit a Statement of Support (already used in the MLS program) as verification from their employer that the student will be able to complete the practicum requirement in their work lab setting.
Students must select one specific area of emphasis that corresponds with content essential to certification exams: 1) clinical chemistry, 2) blood banking, 3) clinical hematology or 4) clinical microbiology. All certificate students complete core certificate course requirements (5 credits) with the remainder of the required credits determined according to selected emphasis. Practicum components comprise a minor part of the core course MLS 401 (Central Processing) course which requires a one-to two week required practicum, depending on scheduled hours per week, to be completed in the lab setting in which students are employed.
The Undergraduate Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science requires 12-13 credit hours:
