Breastmilk makes the world healthier, smarter, and more equal. Despite the consolidation of evidence for breastfeeding’s benefits, many women do not achieve their breastfeeding goals. The reasons why women avoid or stop breastfeeding range from medical, cultural, and psychological barriers to physical discomfort and inconvenience. The Fundamentals of Lactation Counseling badge is open to all UK College of Nursing students.
Students who complete the Undergraduate Badge in Fundamentals of Lactation Counseling will: (1) be familiar with applying an individualized counseling approach to lactating mothers, infants, and the family; (2) utilize evidence-based tools and methods to assist clients in maintaining effective lactation, correcting any issues, and making referrals; and (3) demonstrate an understanding of their role as advocates in promoting, protecting, and supporting breastfeeding/lactating mother/infant dyads.
This badge provides an overview of comprehensive, evidence-based breastfeeding management that includes theoretical foundations, practical skills experience, and competency verification. Basic and complex technical issues are explored within the context of problem-solving and counseling strategies. These experiences prepare participants for professional lactation consultation work in hospitals and public/community settings.
