The major in music education is the joint concern of the School of Music in the College of Fine Arts and the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education. Admission to the program is granted only after the successful completion of an audition in the student’s performance area. In addition to completing the required courses, the student must present a halfrecital or the equivalent on the major instrument or in voice during or after the sixth semester of study.
Music education majors who wish to receive a teaching certificate must meet the certification requirements of the College of Education, as well as the requirements for the College of Fine Arts. To qualify for student teaching and state teacher certification, a student must be officially admitted into the Teacher Education Program. Certification also requires successful completion of the NTE/Praxis II and a one-year paid internship. Large Ensemble
- For instrumental and piano majors: MUC 175 , MUC 187 , MUC 188 , MUC 189 , MUC 191 (001 or 401)
- For voice and piano majors: MUC 174 , MUC 192 (001, 002 or 003)
- For guitar majors: MUC 177
- All music majors must participate in large conductor led ensembles directly related to their primary instrument each semester in residence, as determined by ensemble conductors in consultation with studio faculty. Voice majors with a significant performance commitment to a major Opera Theatre production may be allowed to reduce large choral ensemble participation to a minimum of six semesters and eight credits of large choral ensemble participation, by advance approval of the Director of Undergraduate Studies. Six semesters of 1-credit large ensembles (6 total credits) which includes 1-credit of chamber music. Six additional credits in electives are also required by which the student should continue large ensemble participation each semester while in residence. Wind and percussion students are required to take at least two semesters of Marching Band. Six semesters. Credit(s): 6

Students with little or no prior piano study should normally expect to complete the piano proficiency examination by the end of four semesters of study.
