Music, B.A.


Admission to the B.A. program in music is granted only after the successful completion of an audition in the student’s performance area.

The major in music must include the following:

    plus 39 hours at 300-level or above

Major musical instrument or voice performance course of 2 hours each semester

Large Ensemble

  •      For instrumental and piano majors: MUC 175 , MUC 187 , MUC 188 , MUC 189 , MUC 191  (001 or 401)
  •      For voice and piano majors: MUC 174 , MUC 192  (001, 002 or 003)
  •      For guitar majors: MUC 177  
  • ​     All music majors must participate in large conductor led ensembles directly related to their primary instrument each semester in residence, as determined by ensemble conductors in consultation with studio faculty. Voice majors with a significant performance commitment to a major Opera Theatre production may be allowed to reduce large choral ensemble participation to a minimum of six semesters and eight credits of large choral ensemble participation, by advance approval of the Director of Undergraduate Studies. Brass, percussion, flute, clarinet, and saxophone students should include one semester of Marching Band. Four semesters. Credit(s): 4

Proficiency Examination

  • All music majors must pass a piano proficiency examination and should schedule, in consultation with their advisor, a suitable course each semester until this requirement is completed. Students with little or no prior piano study should normally expect to complete the piano proficiency examination by the end of four semesters of study. Credit(s): 0-4

MUS 001  Recital Attendance

  • 4 courses -zero credit - completed satisfactorily. Credit(s): 0

Foreign Language


To satisfy the requirement students must: 1) satisfy a four-semester sequence in one language by passing the fourth semester, or 2) pass the third semester course in one language and the second semester course in a second language, or 3) demonstrate equivalent competence.

6.  Electives: To include 12 hours in courses related to the major but outside the School of Music. The student’s advisor must approve choice of this related work. Courses used to fulfill UK Core requirements may be used to fulfill this related work, when appropriate.
