Appalachian Studies Minor

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs by Degree

This minor offers students with interests in Appalachian regional studies an opportunity to pursue a minor concentration to complement a major in any of UK’s colleges. This program enables students to comprehend more fully the history, health and well-being, social movements,  environment, and arts of the region - its residents, its challenges, and its future.

The minor in Appalachian Studies requires 18 hours of coursework to include the following: (1) the core course, APP 200 Introduction to Appalachian Studies ; and (2) 15 credit hours of electives in Appalachian Studies, to be approved by the Appalachian Studies Director (after the minor is added officially through MyUK) and added to the student’s transcript through the College of Arts & Sciences Advising office.

Before each semester, a list of electives approved for the Appalachian Studies minor is posted on this web site: appalachiancenter.as.uky.edu/appal-courses.

Other courses, not on the list, that have Appalachia-related content or substantial student projects or papers related to Appalachia can be approved by the director.

For more information, contact: Appalachian Studies Program Director, Ann Kingsolver, ann.kingsolver@uky.edu; 624 Maxwelton Court, University of Kentucky; 859-218-4088; or appalachiancenter.as.uky.edu/.
