Any student earning a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree must complete a minimum of 60 hours in natural, physical, mathematical, and computer science. Please note: courses with an HIS prefix are generally not accepted towards fulfilling this 60-hour requirement. Therefore, be sure to keep this requirement in mind as you choose your course work for the requirements in the major. Other Course Work Required for the Major
From the Major Department:
Students must complete a total of 30 credit hours in HIS prefix course work. Of those 30 credit hours 6 credit hours must be at the 100-level or above, 9 credit hours must be at the 200-level or above, and 15 credit hours must be at the 300-level or above. Students may not use the major core courses (HIS 301 and HIS 499 ) to satisfy the elective requirement. Credit(s): 30
Course work used to satisfy the region requirement may also be used to satisfy the historical era requirement.

Students must take one course from each region listed below.
- United States history
- European history
- Asian or African or Middle Eastern or Latin American history
Historical Eras
Students must take two courses from each historical era listed below.
- The period before 1789
- The period after 1789
Students must choose additional HIS prefix course work to lead to the minimum of 30 credit hours required.
From Outside the HIS Prefix
Students must complete a total of 9 credit hours of course work outside the HIS prefix at the 200-level or above. Courses used to satisfy this requirement must be in a related field within the disciplines of the humanities, fine arts, social sciences, mathematics, and natural and applied sciences. Students may not use foreign language instruction courses to satisfy this requirement. However, courses in foreign literature, civilization, and culture may be used to fulfill this requirement.
