African American and Africana Studies, B.A.

The African American and Africana Studies degree allows students to complete an interdisciplinary program of study that draws together the multifaceted understanding of the Africana experience. The rich and challenging course work addresses historical, cultural, sociological, political, and psychological factors that affect the lives of people of African descent worldwide. Students will develop the breadth of knowledge indicative of a liberal arts education, and enhance their critical thinking and writing, analysis, and communication skills. The African American and Africana Studies degree will be beneficial for a wide range of students who plan to work in communication and media, education, law, health care, non-profit, and government.

120 hours (minimum)

Any student earning a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree must complete a minimum of 39 hours at the 300+ level. These hours are generally completed by the Major Requirements. However, keep this hour requirement in mind as you choose your course work for the requirements in the major. See the complete description of College requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree .

Students must complete 6 or more credit hours of courses outside the AAS prefix, but in allied departments and programs at the 200 level or above to bring the total number of credit hours within the major to 39. Free electives may not be counted toward the UK Core or A&S requirements.
