Art Studio, B.F.A.

The B.F.A. program allows for the development of studio practice at a more focused and pre-professional level. Areas of focus may include the following: animation, ceramics, drawing, digital fabrication, digital illustration, fiber, graphic design, painting, photography, printmedia, sculpture, video, virtual reality and web design.
Students seeking the Bachelor of Fine Arts in art studio must complete the following:

BFA Foundations Requirements
Progression Requirement
Students must have earned at least a letter grade of C in each of the premajor foundation courses to progress to major status.
Residency Requirement
Students are required to complete a minimum of two semesters at UK following admission into the BFA program.
To finish the BFA degree in 4 years, students will take 2 courses with the A-S prefix per semester. Students are allowed a maximum of 3 courses with the A-S prefix per semester.
Students may request special permission to register for a 4th A-S course in one semester by petitioning the SA/VS Director of Undergraduate Studies. These petitions will be granted in extenuating circumstances only.

Foundation Exhibition
Each student in the Foundations Program must participate in the Foundations Exhibition during their first spring semester. Students will submit one work of their own selection from their foundations’ course work for the exhibition, present it professionally, and provide an accompanying artist’s statement. Participation in this exhibition is required and is tracked in **A-S 001 Foundation Exhibition .
*A-S 001 is offered spring semesters only and must be taken in the first spring semester as a BFA major.

Major Requirements
B.F.A. Entrance Portfolio
Students are eligible to apply for entrance to the B.F.A. program after a minimum of 45 credit hours have been earned. Applicants must also have completed all Art Studio or Digital Media Design Foundations requirements prior to application.
The procedure to apply for entry into the Art Studio B.F.A. program consists of an application followed by a review of the student’s creative work by an Art Studio faculty committee. The application and review process will be juried from actual works of art. The selected works should demonstrate the student’s creative abilities and productivity, current proposed direction, and strong evidence that the student can succeed in creating a coherent body of work for a senior exhibition. Students will be present during the review to answer questions regarding formal, technical and conceptual elements of their work. In addition to the in-person review, students will submit an artist’s statement. If an applicant is not accepted into the program upon first review, they may reapply in a later semester.

- 2 credit hours of ART 291 B.F.A. Studio Practicum
- At least 27 credit hours of studio courses at or above the 300 level, according to the student’s committee-approved plan of study.
- At least 9 credit hours of art studio courses at or above the 400 level.
- At least 9 credit hours of art history at or above the 300 level.
- A-S 490 Senior Seminar (3 credit hours; taken during the final semester of study).
- Students are required to complete a minimum of two semesters at the University of Kentucky following admission to the B.F.A. program.
- Students are required to participate in a B.F.A. Senior Thesis Exhibition, reviewed by their B.F.A. committee in final semester of study.

- Students must pass an exit review with their B.F.A. committee their final semester of study in order to graduate with the B.F.A. degree.
