MCL 300 - CONTACT ZONES: CULTIVATING INTERCULTURAL COMPETENCE College of Arts and Sciences
Credit(s): 3
This course aims to help students acquire skills and knowledge needed to promote understanding of individuals/groups from diverse backgrounds, without reinforcing stereotypes in the name of ‘cultural difference.’ Toward this end, this course will (1) utilize, as a guide/lead, the concept of ‘contact zones,’ zones of exchange that divide but simultaneously connect ‘us’ and ‘them’; and (2) have each student conduct a semester-long ethnographic project concerning the contact zone. This course is a Graduation Composition and Communication Requirement (GCCR) course in certain programs, and hence is not likely to be eligible for automatic transfer credit to UK.
Prereq: Students must have completed 60 hours of course work and completed the UK Core Composition and Communication I and II requirement before enrolling in MCL/SPA 300. Crosslisted with: SPA 300
